Where it came from
Stormwatch #38 was published in 1996 as part of the Image Comics line, created during the mid-90s boom of independent superhero universes. This issue falls within the tenure of writer Warren Ellis, whose work on the series is widely credited with transitioning the title from a traditional superhero book into a more grounded, cynical, and politically charged narrative that deconstructed the tropes of the genre.
The issue features the artistic contributions of Tom Raney, who was tasked with visualizing the complex, high-stakes tactical environments characteristic of Ellis's scripts. The design aesthetic reflects the bold, gritty sensibilities common to the period's WildStorm imprint, emphasizing sharp lines and intense character dynamics. It remains a notable entry for collectors interested in the evolution of modern team-based comics and the precursor to the Authority.
