Stormwatch #49

Stormwatch #49 was published by Image Comics in 1997 as part of the long-running series created by Jim Lee under his WildStorm imprint. This particular issue appeared during a transitional period for the title, preceding the significant creative overhaul that would eventually lead to the launch of The Authority. The narrative focus of this era centered on the United Nations-sanctioned superhero team navigating complex geopolitical tensions and the internal frictions of a global crisis management organization.

The creative direction for this period of the series was defined by writer Warren Ellis, whose tenure is widely credited with shifting the tone of the book toward a more cynical and sophisticated brand of political science fiction. While the visual identity of Stormwatch was established by various artists throughout its run, the design of the series sought to differentiate itself from the traditional caped crusader archetypes by emphasizing utilitarian costumes and militaristic operational protocols, setting a stylistic precedent for the gritty, high-stakes superhero fiction that dominated the late 1990s.
