Strikeforce: Morituri #16

Strikeforce: Morituri #16, published by Marvel Comics in 1988, serves as a pivotal installment in a series renowned for its dark, subverted take on the superhero genre. Created by writer Peter B. Gillis and artist Brent Anderson, the series introduced a compelling, tragic conceit: Earth's superpowered defenders were granted their abilities through a process that guaranteed death within a year. By the time this issue was released, the series had established a reputation for its willingness to kill off central characters, a narrative boldness that stood in stark contrast to the status quo-heavy comics of the era.

The visual design of this era reflects a mid-eighties aesthetic characterized by intricate line work and a somber, high-stakes atmosphere. Brent Anderson’s approach focused on grounding the fantastical elements of the Morituri program in a gritty, human reality, emphasizing the psychological toll on the protagonists. While the series eventually lost some of its initial momentum as rotating creative teams took over, it remains a cult classic among comic historians for its early exploration of mortal consequences in serialized storytelling.
