Strikeforce: Morituri #18

Strikeforce: Morituri #18, published in 1988, serves as a pivotal chapter in the innovative series created by writer Peter B. Gillis and artist Brent Anderson. Launched by Marvel Comics in 1986, the series was designed to explore a high-concept premise where Earth's volunteer defenders receive superpowers that inevitably kill them within a year. This specific issue reflects the series' signature blend of character-driven drama and grim military science fiction, prioritizing the psychological toll of terminal heroism over traditional caped crusader tropes.

The art and narrative direction of the series were intentionally darker and more adult-oriented than typical Marvel fare of the mid-eighties. By the time issue #18 arrived, the series had established a reputation for pushing boundaries regarding the mortality of its cast. Brent Anderson’s visual style contributed significantly to this tone, utilizing sharp lines and expressive character work to underscore the constant sense of impending doom that defined the Morituri project, ultimately securing the series a dedicated cult following among readers who favored complex, serialized storytelling.
