The Amazing Spider-Man #180

The Amazing Spider-Man issue 180, published in May 1978, serves as a notable entry in the series during a period of transition for Marvel Comics. Written by Marv Wolfman and illustrated by Ross Andru, the story continues the narrative arcs established in the late 1970s, characterized by a shift toward more grounded, character-driven storytelling. The issue is historically significant for featuring the first appearance of the character Will o' the Wisp, a villain whose mysterious origin and unique powers reflected the era's experimentation with more psychological and supernatural elements within the Spider-Man mythos.

The aesthetic of this issue is defined by Ross Andru’s signature dynamic layout, which sought to balance dense action sequences with the character’s internal monologues. Andru, a veteran artist whose work on Spider-Man is often associated with the high-stakes drama of the 1970s, utilized sharp lines and expressive poses that became synonymous with the character's movement. While issue 180 is often overshadowed by the larger milestone issues surrounding it, it remains a well-regarded specimen of the silver-to-bronze age transition, appreciated by collectors for its role in expanding the Spider-Man rogues' gallery.
