The Books of Magic #16

The Books of Magic series was launched by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint in 1993, following the success of Neil Gaiman's original four-issue miniseries. Issue #16, published in 1995, continues the journey of Timothy Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world's most powerful magician. This era of the series was written by John Ney Rieber, who took over the mantle of chronicling Tim’s development as he navigated the complex and often dangerous landscapes of myth, folklore, and occult history.

The interior art for this issue was provided by Peter Gross, who became a foundational visual architect for the series. Gross employed a grounded, slightly melancholic aesthetic that balanced the high-fantasy elements of the script with the realistic struggles of a teenager coming of age. The issue was well-regarded for maintaining the dark, sophisticated tone established by Vertigo, reflecting the imprint's mission to produce mature, literary-focused comics that expanded the boundaries of the superhero genre.
