The Books of Magic #3

Published in 1991, The Books of Magic #3 is part of a four-issue prestige format miniseries written by Neil Gaiman for DC Comics. The series was conceived as an introduction to the magical landscape of the DC Universe, following a young boy named Timothy Hunter who is guided through history and the occult by four mysterious figures known as the Trenchcoat Brigade. The project served as a creative bridge that helped establish the Vertigo imprint, providing a bridge between traditional superhero narratives and the darker, more literary sensibilities that would define the imprint’s future.

The art for this specific issue was illustrated by Charles Vess, whose delicate, storybook-influenced style was instrumental in establishing the ethereal tone of the series. Vess drew upon a classical fantasy aesthetic to contrast the grounded reality of the protagonist's modern-day London. Upon its release, the miniseries was highly regarded for its ambition and thematic depth, eventually becoming a foundational text for modern gothic fantasy comics and cementing Gaiman's reputation as a pivotal writer in the transition of the medium toward more mature storytelling.
