The Books of Magic #25

The Books of Magic #25, published in 1996, serves as a pivotal conclusion to the original miniseries-turned-ongoing saga created by Neil Gaiman. As the final issue written by John Ney Rieber during the title's early Vertigo run, it captures the series' transition from a standalone mythological exploration into a more grounded, character-driven narrative centered on the protagonist Timothy Hunter. The issue explores the psychological toll of Timothy’s destiny as the world's most powerful magician, reflecting the darker, more mature sensibilities that defined the Vertigo imprint during the mid-nineties.

The interior art for this issue was provided by Peter Gross, a long-term collaborator whose visual style became synonymous with the series' atmospheric and introspective tone. Gross aimed to balance the whimsical nature of high fantasy with the stark realism of Timothy's troubled domestic life. His work on this issue was well-regarded for its consistency and ability to maintain the series' distinct aesthetic through multiple editorial shifts, solidifying the visual identity of the Books of Magic universe for years to come.
