The Books of Magic #28

The Books of Magic series, launched in 1993 as an imprint of DC Comics’ Vertigo line, followed the journey of Tim Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world’s most powerful magician. This issue, number 28, was released in 1996 as part of the series’ ongoing narrative arc, which focused on the intersection of mundane teenage life and the complex, often dark intricacies of the mystical realm. The series was designed to explore the psychological weight of destiny within a contemporary urban fantasy setting.

Issue 28 was part of a run that benefited from the creative influence of writers such as John Ney Rieber, who took over the mantle following Neil Gaiman's original miniseries. The artwork during this period aimed to maintain the atmospheric, dreamlike quality established by the initial run, using a stylistic approach that leaned into the gritty yet ethereal sensibilities characteristic of the Vertigo aesthetic in the mid-nineties. It remains a notable entry for readers tracing the expansion of the DC magical universe during its experimental decade.
