The Books of Magic #27

The Books of Magic #27 was published in 1996 as part of the ongoing Vertigo imprint series. Following the success of Neil Gaiman’s original four-issue miniseries, this ongoing title continued the adventures of Timothy Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world's most powerful magician. By issue 27, the series had moved into a darker, more mature tone characteristic of the mid-nineties Vertigo aesthetic, exploring the consequences of magic and the development of Tim’s character as he navigates the complex DC supernatural landscape.

The creative team for this period was headlined by writer John Ney Rieber, who took over the scripting duties to expand upon the foundations established by Gaiman. The visual style featured work by artists like Peter Gross, who became synonymous with the series' atmospheric and surreal presentation. The aesthetic was designed to balance suburban groundedness with otherworldly horror, receiving critical attention for its nuanced approach to the 'boy wizard' trope, which predated many similar tropes in contemporary popular fiction.
