The Books of Magic #29

Published in 1996 as part of the Vertigo imprint under DC Comics, The Books of Magic #29 represents a mid-series installment in the saga of Timothy Hunter. The series itself originated from Neil Gaiman's acclaimed 1990 miniseries, which explored the occult underpinnings of the DC Universe through the eyes of a young boy destined to become the world's most powerful magician. By the time this issue was released, the title had shifted into an ongoing monthly series that navigated the complexities of adolescence alongside dark, mythological fantasy.

This specific era of the series featured writing by John Ney Rieber and art by Peter Gross, who became a defining visual influence on the title. The creative team aimed to ground the ethereal, high-fantasy concepts of the original miniseries in a more visceral, gritty reality that reflected the tone of the Vertigo line at the time. The work was generally received as a thoughtful expansion of the established lore, appreciated by readers for its psychological depth and the atmospheric consistency maintained by Gross’s illustrative style throughout the mid-nineties run.
