The Books of Magic #30

Published in 1996 as part of the ongoing Vertigo imprint series, The Books of Magic #30 represents a transition point in the maturation of the DC Universe’s magical landscape. Following Neil Gaiman’s original miniseries, the monthly title sought to ground the protagonist, Timothy Hunter, in the complexities of adolescence while maintaining the dark, ethereal atmosphere that defined the Vertigo aesthetic during the mid-nineties.

The issue features scripting by John Ney Rieber with interior art by Peter Gross, who became a definitive visual architect for the series. Their collaborative effort was aimed at shifting the narrative from high-fantasy myth-building to a more intimate, character-driven drama, focusing on Tim's internal conflicts as a budding mage. Critics of the era generally praised the series for its intellectual approach to comic storytelling, often highlighting Gross's ability to render the uncanny alongside mundane settings.
