The Books of Magic #40

Published in 1998 as part of the ongoing Vertigo imprint series, The Books of Magic #40 continued the narrative expansion of Neil Gaiman’s original 1990 miniseries. By this stage in the run, the series had evolved under various writers to explore the complex intersection of British mythology and modern urban fantasy. This issue serves as a discrete chapter within the darker, more mature tone established by the Vertigo editorial team during the late nineties.

The creative team for this period focused on maintaining the series' reputation for rich, literary world-building while shifting toward more episodic storytelling. The visual style of this era favored intricate, atmospheric line work that complemented the series' exploration of Timothy Hunter's journey from a naive boy to a powerful occult figure. It remains a notable entry for readers interested in the mid-series development of a title that fundamentally shaped the dark fantasy landscape of DC Comics.
