The Fury of Firestorm #39

The Fury of Firestorm #39, published by DC Comics in September 1985, emerged during a pivotal era for the publisher following the monumental Crisis on Infinite Earths event. As the series progressed through the mid-1980s, it explored the complex dual nature of the nuclear-powered hero, balancing high-stakes science fiction conflict with the personal life of Ronnie Raymond and Professor Martin Stein. This issue remains a quintessential piece of the mid-series run, reflecting the broader editorial shifts toward darker, more mature character studies that defined the comic landscape of the decade.

The creative direction for this period was largely driven by writer Gerry Conway, who had been instrumental in shaping the character's narrative trajectory since his inception. The visual style, characteristic of the mid-80s DC house aesthetic, favored dynamic action sequences coupled with detailed character panels designed to ground the fantastical elements of the Firestorm mythos. The issue is regarded by collectors as a reliable example of the reliable, character-focused storytelling that kept the title afloat during a highly competitive market, valued primarily for its continuity within the long-running series.
