Where it came from
The Fury of Firestorm issue number 60, published by DC Comics in 1987, emerged during a transitional period for the title as it navigated the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths landscape. Written by John Ostrander, who began his seminal run on the series around this time, the issue reflects a shift toward more complex, geopolitical storytelling that moved the character away from traditional superhero tropes and into the realm of political drama and psychological exploration.
The interior art for this era was often handled by Joe Brozowski and Dick Giordano, whose work captured the gritty, grounded aesthetic favored by DC in the late 1980s. Ostrander’s writing was highly regarded for its subversive take on the nuclear-powered hero, turning the comic into a forum for discussing international relations and environmental concerns, which resonated well with readers looking for more sophisticated narratives in the mainstream comic book medium.
