Where it came from
Published in 1976 by Gold Key Comics, The Pink Panther #28 emerged during a period when the character, originally created for the opening titles of the 1963 Blake Edwards film, had become a massive pop-culture phenomenon. Following the success of the animated theatrical shorts and a popular Saturday morning television series, Gold Key sought to capitalize on the panther's silent, slapstick appeal by transitioning him into the medium of comic books.
The issue fits into the broader legacy of Gold Key's licensed material, which often emphasized visual gags to suit the character's pantomime style. While specific creative credits for individual interior issues in this run were often uncredited house productions, the series was designed to appeal to younger audiences by translating the sophisticated, jazz-infused humor of the cartoons into accessible, episodic illustrated narratives.
