Where it came from
Published by Gold Key Comics in 1975, The Pink Panther #22 emerged during the height of the character's popularity following his transition from the animated opening credits of the Blake Edwards films to a standalone television star. This era of the comic book series sought to translate the surreal, silent slapstick humor of the DePatie-Freleng Enterprises cartoons into a print format, utilizing vibrant panels to capture the Panther’s signature dry wit and unconventional problem-solving.
The issue features the iconic character design by Friz Freleng and Hawley Pratt, which defined the Panther’s long, lithe frame and cool, detached persona. While the creative teams on these titles often remained uncredited, they followed a standardized editorial style intended to appeal to a younger demographic. The series is now regarded as a nostalgic touchstone of 1970s animation tie-in culture, prized by collectors for its commitment to the aesthetic established by the animated shorts.
