The Savage Sword of Conan #14

Published in August 1976 by Marvel Comics under its Curtis Magazines imprint, The Savage Sword of Conan #14 served as a pivotal installment in the long-running black-and-white magazine series. Conceived during the 1970s sword-and-sorcery boom, the publication allowed for more mature, unfiltered storytelling than the color comic books of the era, adhering to the tone of Robert E. Howard’s original prose while benefiting from the gritty aesthetic favored by the magazine format.

The issue features cover art by the renowned Boris Vallejo, whose vivid and muscular style became synonymous with the visual identity of the Conan brand. Inside, the narrative continued to flesh out the Cimmerian’s world through the collaborative efforts of writers like Roy Thomas and artists such as John Buscema. The series was well received by fantasy enthusiasts for its commitment to high-contrast illustration and narrative depth, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of 1970s pulp-revival literature.
