Where it came from
Published by Marvel Comics under the Curtis Magazines imprint in June 1985, The Savage Sword of Conan #113 reflects the mid-1980s peak of the long-running black-and-white magazine series. This issue continues the tradition of adapting Robert E. Howard’s pulp fantasy stories, designed to offer a more mature, graphic experience than the color comic books of the time. The larger magazine format allowed for intricate, high-contrast ink work that favored the dramatic aesthetics of sword-and-sorcery literature.
The issue features artwork and storytelling consistent with the editorial direction of the era, which emphasized visceral action and dark fantasy atmosphere. The series was highly regarded for maintaining a distinct aesthetic identity separate from the main Marvel Universe, relying on a rotating stable of talented artists and writers to flesh out Conan’s world. The Savage Sword of Conan remains a cornerstone of 1970s and 80s fantasy publishing, prized by collectors for its commitment to the grit and narrative complexity of the original source material.
