The Savage Sword of Conan #12

The Savage Sword of Conan issue number 12, published in June 1976, was part of Marvel Comics' black-and-white magazine line under the Curtis Magazines imprint. This format allowed the publisher to bypass the restrictive Comics Code Authority, enabling more mature themes, graphic violence, and complex storytelling that aligned closely with Robert E. Howard’s original literary vision for the character. At this stage in the series, the publication served as a primary outlet for sophisticated sword-and-sorcery narratives that were considered too intense for the standard color comic books.

The creative direction for this specific issue featured the work of writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith. Windsor-Smith was instrumental in defining the visual aesthetic of Conan for the Marvel era, utilizing a meticulous, illustrative style that prioritized atmospheric tension and visceral character detail. The issue was received as a cornerstone of the magazine's run, praised by fans and critics alike for the synergy between Thomas's faithful adaptation of Howard’s prose and Windsor-Smith’s evocative, high-contrast ink work that pushed the boundaries of comic illustration at the time.
