Where it came from
Vigilante #22, released in 1985, is a notable installment in the DC Comics series created by Marv Wolfman. The series followed Adrian Chase, a district attorney turned vigilante who grappled with the moral ambiguity of his extrajudicial methods. This particular issue emerged during a period where DC was exploring grittier, more grounded anti-hero narratives, moving away from traditional superhero archetypes to examine the psychological toll of vigilantism.
The issue features cover art by Kevin Nowlan and interior work by Alan Kupperberg. The creative team aimed to maintain the title's reputation for visceral, character-driven storytelling, often pitting Chase against both systemic corruption and his own internal struggle for redemption. Upon its release, the series was recognized for its willingness to depict the darker consequences of violence, establishing a tone that would influence later character studies in the medium.
