Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #124

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #124 was published in 1965 as part of the long-running Dell and later Gold Key comic series that brought the animated star to the printed page. During this era, the comics served as a primary extension of the theatrical shorts, adapting the frantic energy of the Lantz studio characters for a younger readership that enjoyed the slapstick humor synonymous with the Woody Woodpecker brand.

The comic’s design followed the standardized house style of the Western Publishing group, which prioritized clarity and character fidelity to match the recognizable appearances of Woody and his supporting cast, such as Andy Panda or Chilly Willy. While individual writers and illustrators at the time often worked under house names or remained uncredited due to editorial policy, these issues were widely distributed through newsstands, solidifying the character’s presence in mid-century American pop culture.
