Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #126

The Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker comic series, published by Dell Comics under their Four Color line and later as a standalone title, served as a printed extension of the popular theatrical animated shorts. Issue #126, released in the mid-1950s, belongs to a period when Dell Comics dominated the newsstand market by focusing on licensed animation properties, emphasizing wholesome, character-driven slapstick narratives that mirrored the anarchic spirit of the screen cartoons.

The interior art for this era of Woody Woodpecker comics was often produced by a stable of uncredited but highly skilled studio artists and contractors who translated Lantz's vibrant, high-energy animation style onto the page. These comics were designed to appeal to the broad demographic of post-war American youth, utilizing a standardized layout that prioritized gag-heavy scripts and clear visual storytelling, maintaining a consistent aesthetic that helped cement the character as a cornerstone of mid-century pop culture.
