Where it came from
Woody Woodpecker #123 was published by Dell Comics in 1963 as part of the long-running Four Color and subsequent solo-titled series featuring Walter Lantz's famous animated character. During this era, Dell Comics focused on providing wholesome, family-oriented entertainment, with the Woody Woodpecker titles often featuring episodic, slapstick-driven adventures that mirrored the chaotic energy of the theatrical animated shorts produced by Lantz's studio.
The art and stories of this period were produced by a rotation of professional staff artists and writers at Western Publishing, which handled the creative work for Dell. These comic books were designed to be accessible to a younger audience, prioritizing visual storytelling and kinetic gags over complex narrative arcs. Like many licensed comic properties of the mid-20th century, this issue was intended for mass-market newsstand distribution and is now collected by fans of classic animation and the golden age of anthropomorphic funny animal comics.
