Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #120

Woody Woodpecker #120 was published in 1968 by Gold Key Comics, a division of Western Publishing that held the long-standing license for Walter Lantz’s animated characters. This era of the series reflects the transition of comic book content toward a younger audience, moving away from the more anarchic tone of the original theatrical shorts toward standardized, gag-driven adventures suitable for newsstand racks.

The art and narrative structure of this period were produced by studio artists working under the Western Publishing system, which typically prioritized house style over individual creator attribution. These comics were designed to act as accessible entry points for children already familiar with the character from television syndication, focusing on slapstick scenarios that maintained the core identity of the mischievous woodpecker while adhering to the strict moral standards of the Comics Code Authority.
