Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #135

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #135 was published by Gold Key Comics in 1966. This series was part of a long-running licensing agreement between Walter Lantz Productions and Western Publishing, which utilized the Gold Key imprint to distribute comics based on popular theatrical animated shorts. The issue arrived during a period when the character had transitioned from his chaotic, proto-anarchic theatrical roots toward a more sanitized, episodic format suitable for the mass-market comic book racks of the mid-1960s.

The comic featured the signature slapstick and wordplay characteristic of the Woody Woodpecker universe, overseen by Western Publishing's veteran stable of artists and writers. While individual creator credits for specific stories in these mid-tier issues were rarely highlighted in the era, the design language adhered strictly to the established model sheets provided by the Lantz studio. The issue was received as typical newsstand filler, catering to a juvenile audience who enjoyed the broad, kinetic visual humor popularized by the concurrent television broadcasts of the character's cartoons.
