Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #130

Published by Dell Comics in 1961, Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker issue 130 represents a period when Dell was the dominant publisher of licensed animation-based comic books. This series capitalized on the enduring popularity of the Woody Woodpecker theatrical shorts, which had been a staple of cinema cartoons since the 1940s. The comic served to bridge the gap between television syndication and print, offering fans a way to engage with the characters' slapstick antics in a static format.

The visual style of these Dell issues was overseen by an editorial team focused on maintaining consistency with the Walter Lantz studio's animation models. While the scripts often utilized a rotating group of anonymous writers and illustrators under the Dell house style, the design was explicitly intended to capture the frenetic, chaotic energy of the animated shorts. At the time, these comics were marketed toward younger audiences, leading to their status as disposable reading material rather than preserved collectibles, which has made well-preserved copies increasingly sought after by comic historians.
