Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #85

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #85 was published during the long-running tenure of Dell Comics, a powerhouse in the mid-century American comic book market. By the time this issue was released, Woody Woodpecker had transitioned from a theatrical animation star into a staple of print media, with Dell utilizing their 'Four Color' and self-titled series to extend the popularity of Lantz’s studio creations to a younger reading demographic.

The interior artwork for these titles was typically produced by a stable of uncredited studio artists tasked with maintaining the specific, high-energy aesthetic defined by the Lantz animation team. The design philosophy focused on slapstick humor and visual gags that mirrored the pacing of the cartoons, aiming to capture the chaotic personality of the woodpecker. These issues were widely distributed at newsstands and drugstores, serving as affordable entertainment that cemented the character's status as a pop culture icon of the post-war era.
