Where it came from
Published in June 1988 by Eclipse Comics, this issue was part of a limited series that sought to revitalize the classic Zorro archetype for a contemporary comic book audience. By the late 1980s, Eclipse Comics was gaining a reputation for high-quality production values and a commitment to diverse storytelling, often choosing to explore pulpy, adventurous characters through a more nuanced lens than the traditional superhero format.
The creative direction for this series focused on atmospheric storytelling, utilizing bold illustrative techniques that paid homage to the character’s swashbuckling origins while incorporating the detailed pacing common in late-80s independent comics. The series was generally well-received by fans of the character, who appreciated the effort to ground Don Diego de la Vega in a narrative style that felt sophisticated and faithful to the spirit of the original pulp serials.
