Where it came from
Published in August 1988, this specific issue of Zorro arrived during a period when the character was seeing a brief resurgence in comic book form via Marvel Comics' imprint, Star Comics. The series was designed to appeal to a younger demographic, adapting the swashbuckling hero for a new generation while remaining grounded in the pulp-adventure traditions established by Johnston McCulley in 1919.
The creative direction for this era focused on vibrant, accessible storytelling that emphasized Zorro's dual identity and his fight against corruption in Spanish California. The art style reflected the standard comic book aesthetics of the late eighties, prioritizing action-oriented layouts and character-driven vignettes that aligned with the then-current editorial standards at Marvel.
