Where it came from
The 1988 Zorro series, published by Marvel Comics under its Star Comics imprint, was launched to coincide with a broader push for licensed properties featuring classic adventure archetypes. This specific issue reflects the aesthetic of late 1980s mass-market comic production, which focused on accessible, serialized storytelling aimed at younger readers who were seeing a resurgence of interest in the masked vigilante persona.
The design and narrative tone of the series were crafted to modernize the traditional swashbuckling tropes established in Johnston McCulley’s original pulp stories. While the series did not achieve the longevity of the source material's most iconic iterations, it serves as a distinct representative of the period's house style, prioritizing dynamic action sequences and simplified character arcs characteristic of the Star Comics line.
