Chococat was introduced by the Japanese company Sanrio in 1996, emerging during a period of rapid international expansion for the brand’s character-driven merchandise. Designed by Sanrio’s creative team, the character was intended to be a simple, endearing addition to their roster of 'kawaii' animals, characterized by his distinct black fur, large eyes, and the small, chocolate-colored nose that inspired his name. He quickly became a fixture in stationery and accessory lines, appealing to a demographic that favored minimalist aesthetic design.

The character’s identity is rooted in his playful, slightly scatterbrained personality, often depicted with his antenna-like whiskers that function as sensors for news and gossip.
