Where it came from
Kuromi, the mischievous rival to My Melody, was introduced by Sanrio in 2005. As a character designed to embody a punk-rock aesthetic with her iconic black jester's hat and skull emblem, she quickly became a fan favorite for her complex personality. This Pop! figure, released as a Fall Convention exclusive, taps into the global appeal of the Sanrio franchise by translating Kuromi’s distinctive look into the stylized, large-headed vinyl format that defines the Funko Pop line.
The design of this specific figure maintains the standard Sanrio aesthetic while incorporating the unique branding of a convention-limited release. Funko’s designers aim to capture the essential characteristics of the character—specifically the pink skull on her hood—within their signature simplified sculpting style. It was received as a sought-after collectible upon its release, appealing to both longtime Sanrio enthusiasts and modern vinyl toy collectors who prioritize limited-edition character variations.
