Where it came from
The Kirin figure, released as part of the Pop! Asia series under number 146, draws its inspiration from the mythical creature known throughout East Asian folklore as a symbol of prosperity, serenity, and good fortune. This figure belongs to the Auspicious Beats collection, which Funko developed to celebrate traditional cultural iconography through their signature stylized aesthetic. The design emphasizes the creature's hybrid features, including its deer-like body, scaled hide, and single horn, rendered with the minimalist proportions characteristic of the Pop! brand.
The design process focused on balancing historical artistic motifs with the simplified, approachable geometry that defines the Pop! aesthetic. By translating the complex, auspicious imagery of the Kirin into a compact, vinyl format, Funko aimed to make a piece of cultural heritage accessible to a global audience of toy collectors. Upon its release, the figure was primarily marketed toward collectors of the Pop! Asia line, finding appreciation for its vibrant color palette and its role as a contemporary representation of ancient mythological motifs.
