Where it came from
The MTV Moon Person Pop! figure was released as part of the Funko Pop! Ad Icons series, a line dedicated to commemorating iconic corporate mascots and cultural symbols. The figure pays homage to the original 1981 Moon Landing statuette, which was inspired by the Apollo 11 mission and became the definitive symbol of the fledgling Music Television network. It serves as a nostalgic celebration of the era when the channel revolutionized the music industry by turning songs into visual experiences.
The design of the figure translates the sleek, metallic aesthetic of the VMA trophy into the signature stylized proportions of the Funko brand. By isolating the character from its context as a television award and transforming it into a collectible vinyl figure, Funko highlights the enduring pop-culture legacy of the network's identity. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of 1980s and 1990s media, finding a place among collectors who prioritize items that represent pivotal shifts in television history.
