Where it came from
Released in 2011, this metallic variant of The Thing was created exclusively for the San Diego Comic-Con. It served as a premium entry in the inaugural Marvel Universe series of Funko Pop! vinyl figures, reflecting a period when the brand was rapidly expanding its presence in the collector market by focusing on iconic comic book characters from the Fantastic Four.
The design features the character in his classic rocky orange form with a distinct metallic paint application to simulate his mineral-based skin. The choice of black eyes was a signature aesthetic for early Funko releases, aiming for a stylized, minimalist interpretation of the character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Upon its release, it became a highly sought-after piece that helped establish the secondary market value for early convention-exclusive figures.
