Where it came from
Released as part of the Funko Pop! Animation line, this figure immortalizes Tomie Kawakami, the iconic antagonist from Junji Ito’s legendary horror manga series. Created by the acclaimed mangaka Junji Ito, the character first debuted in 1987 as a supernatural entity capable of inciting obsessive rage and madness in those around her. The design of the Funko figure draws directly from the unsettlingly elegant aesthetic Ito established, featuring her signature flowing dark hair and the distinctive beauty mark beneath her left eye.
The figure was produced to cater to the growing international mainstream interest in Junji Ito’s surrealist horror works. Funko’s designers opted to translate her haunting, human-like appearance into the standard stylized vinyl format, aiming to capture her eerie charm while adhering to the brand's recognizable aesthetic. Upon its release, the figure was well-received by fans of the Junji Ito Collection anime and manga readers who sought to celebrate the unsettling legacy of one of horror’s most enduring modern villains.
