Where it came from
The Ambulance Helicopter, set 60179-1, was released in early 2018 as part of the LEGO City Mountain Police subtheme. This collection line was designed to broaden the scope of traditional urban-focused City sets by introducing rugged, outdoor-themed rescue vehicles that could navigate challenging terrain. The set was conceived as a mid-sized playset, balancing building complexity with high playability for children, fitting into the wider ecosystem of City emergency response vehicles.
The design of the helicopter prioritizes functional play features, such as a rotating main rotor, a rear hatch that opens to accommodate a stretcher, and a landing gear structure designed to look like skids. The set includes two minifigures—a pilot and a doctor—reflecting the practical, utilitarian aesthetic common to the City theme. Upon its release, it was noted by the building community as a robust and reliable addition to the City rescue lineup, praised for its straightforward construction and its ability to integrate seamlessly with other mountain or emergency-themed builds.
