Where it came from
The Army of Vikings with Heavy Artillery Wagon, released under set number 7020-1 in 2006, belongs to a brief but distinct period of Lego’s historical expansion into non-licensed themes. Developed during a time when the company was exploring niche historical subjects, the set was designed to capture the aesthetic of the Viking Age through stylized, buildable weaponry and minifigures. It emerged as part of a standalone Viking subtheme that sought to balance historical curiosity with the playability expected of the era.
The design focused on integrating functional play features, specifically the heavy artillery wagon, which utilized rubber-band mechanisms to simulate ancient siege warfare. While the theme was short-lived in the broader retail market, the set gained a following among adult fans of Lego for its inclusion of unique molded dragon-head prow elements and period-specific helmet designs. It is viewed today as a foundational example of the mid-2000s design language, blending functional technical elements with traditional construction.
