Where it came from
The LEGO Bird of Paradise set, released in 2021 as part of the LEGO Botanical Collection, was designed to provide an immersive building experience for adults, focusing on home decor rather than traditional play. This set reflects the growing trend of biophilic design, offering a permanent, zero-maintenance floral arrangement that captures the striking, architectural aesthetic of the Strelitzia reginae, a plant native to South Africa.
Designed by Chris McVeigh, the set was crafted to mimic the organic curves and vibrant orange and purple hues of the actual plant. By utilizing specialized elements, such as purple sword pieces for the flower petals and a buildable dark-blue pot, McVeigh achieved a balance between technical LEGO building techniques and lifelike botanical realism. Upon its launch, the model was well-received by the adult fan community for its displayability and the creative repurposing of existing elements.
