Where it came from
Crooks Island, released as set number 60131-1 in 2016, is a notable entry in the Lego City 'Prison Island' subtheme. The set was designed to expand the narrative play of the larger 60130 Prison Island release, providing a specific getaway location for the criminal minifigures. It depicts a small, rocky island hideout equipped with a secret stash, a police jet ski, and a motorboat, reflecting the era's focus on high-action, chase-oriented play patterns common to the City line.
The design of the set focuses on modular play and thematic integration with the wider police and robber aesthetic that has anchored Lego City for decades. As part of the 2016 wave, the set features the updated minifigure aesthetics and specialized police gear that characterized the brand's mid-2010s direction. It was received by the community as a functional, accessible 'add-on' set that allowed builders to flesh out a shoreline display without committing to the larger, flagship police stations of the time.
