Where it came from
Released in 1999 as part of the Lego Duplo Racing subtheme, the Grand Prix Racing Team set was designed to cater to the interests of younger children by introducing them to the excitement of professional motorsports. The set arrived during a period when the Lego Group was actively expanding its Duplo offerings to include more complex, roleplay-oriented scenarios that moved beyond simple building blocks, focusing instead on narrative play.
The design of the set reflects the characteristic aesthetic of late-nineties Duplo, featuring chunky, brightly colored vehicles and larger-than-life figures that are easy for small hands to grasp and manipulate. By incorporating racing-themed accessories and figures in gear, the set aimed to emulate the high-energy environment of a pit crew, providing a tactile introduction to the concept of teamwork and mechanical play that was well-received by parents looking for durable, age-appropriate developmental toys.
