Where it came from
Russell, card number 20 in the Hyperia City set, was introduced as a rare character during the expansion's initial release. The card was designed as part of a series intended to explore the gritty, neon-soaked aesthetic of the titular metropolis, with the character illustrations emphasizing a rugged, tech-noir sensibility common to the game's mid-period art direction.
The artwork for this set was produced by a collective of freelance illustrators commissioned to establish a unified visual identity for Hyperia City's inhabitants. Russell was conceived as a central figure in the set's narrative lore, and while the character was initially met with mild curiosity by players, it eventually gained a dedicated following among collectors who valued the card's distinct visual style and its strategic utility within the broader game ecosystem.
