Where it came from
The Miguel Rivera character card, numbered 21 in the Hyperia City set, was released as part of a mid-2010s expansion for the Hyperia City trading card game. Developed during the height of the resurgence in high-fantasy and neon-noir tabletop aesthetics, the set was designed to reflect an urban landscape infused with experimental technology. The card served as a centerpiece for the collection, aiming to anchor the game’s narrative around the central figure of Rivera as a reluctant tactical leader.
The illustration for the card was commissioned from a lead conceptual artist within the Hyperia creative team, who focused on a moody, high-contrast visual style intended to evoke the atmospheric grit of the game's setting. Upon its release, the card was received positively by the player base, largely due to its balanced stats and the detailed, painterly quality of the artwork which distinguished it from the more standard digital renders seen in other cards from the same series.
