Abhorrent Oculus // Abhorrent Oculus

Abhorrent Oculus is a prominent inclusion in the Duskmourn: House of Horror Art Series, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2024. The set serves as a showcase for the illustrators working on the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, presenting high-fidelity reproductions of the artwork found on standard-game cards without the distraction of rules text or borders. This specific piece celebrates the set's retro-horror aesthetic, which draws heavily from late-twentieth-century cinema and supernatural urban decay.

The artwork for this piece was crafted to evoke a sense of uncanny intrusion, utilizing stark shadows and surreal anatomical distortion characteristic of the horror genre. Designers aimed to push the boundaries of traditional fantasy illustration by integrating elements of body horror and psychological suspense. Upon its release, the Art Series was well-received by collectors who prioritize the visual narrative of the game, finding in these cards a focused appreciation for the dark, immersive world-building of the Duskmourn plane.
