Where it came from
Abian, Luvion Usurper was released in 2021 as part of the Mystery Booster: Convention Edition Playtest cards. These cards were designed to emulate the aesthetic and feel of R&D playtest materials, often featuring unconventional mechanics, placeholder art, or experimental design directions that would not typically make it into a standard Magic: The Gathering set release.
The card was designed to explore a mechanical space centered around shifting card types and color identity. Like other cards in the Playtest series, it reflects the internal process of Wizards of the Coast, where designers experiment with niche ideas. It was received by the community as a curiosity, valued primarily by collectors interested in the oddities and meta-commentary of the game's development cycle.
