Where it came from
Abhorrent Overlord was released in 2013 as part of the Theros set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This specific card, bearing the collector number 75★, was distributed as a foil promotional version, often awarded through competitive play or store-level events. The card draws heavily from Greek mythology, a central theme of the Theros block, depicting a nightmarish creature that aligns with the set's focus on devotion and the pantheon of gods.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov. In designing the Overlord, Velinov focused on the grotesque and imposing nature of the demon, emphasizing its connection to the underworld aesthetic prevalent in the set's darker cards. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its impact in limited formats, where its ability to generate multiple harpy tokens frequently turned the tide of a match.
