Where it came from
Abominable Treefolk was released in 2019 as part of Modern Horizons, a set designed specifically for the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. Unlike standard expansion sets, Modern Horizons was intended to introduce powerful new cards directly into Modern without requiring them to pass through the Standard rotation first. The card reflects the set's thematic focus on snow-covered mechanics, a tribute to the earlier Coldsnap expansion, which rewarded players for including specific snow-themed cards in their decks.
The card was illustrated by artist Anastasia Ovchinnikova, who captured the creature's frigid and imposing presence through a stylistic blending of organic wooden textures and icy, crystalline elements. Upon its debut, the card was received as a niche but effective build-around piece for snow-based control strategies, prized for its ability to grow in strength based on the number of snow permanents a player controls while simultaneously providing utility by tapping down opposing threats.
