Where it came from
The Snow-Covered Forest, numbered 254 in the Modern Horizons set released by Wizards of the Coast in 2019, represents a significant expansion of the snow-land mechanic within the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. While snow-covered lands were originally introduced in the 1995 Ice Age expansion to provide functional variety and support for specific card synergies, their inclusion in Modern Horizons allowed them to enter the Modern tournament format for the first time, reshaping competitive deck building.
The visual design of this specific card highlights the aesthetic direction of the set, which aimed to evoke both nostalgia for older mechanics and a refreshed, high-fidelity look. The artwork captures the stark, frigid atmosphere characteristic of the snow-covered theme, utilizing a wintry palette to distinguish these lands from their standard, non-snow counterparts. It was generally well-received by players for its utility in strategic play and its role in reintroducing a classic element to contemporary gameplay environments.
