Winter's Rest

Winter's Rest was released in 2019 as part of Modern Horizons, the first Magic: The Gathering set designed specifically to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format without requiring them to pass through a Standard legal rotation. The set was created to provide a sandbox for unique mechanics and design space that would typically be too complex or powerful for the standard competitive environment. As a white enchantment with the aura subtype, the card fits into the set's broader theme of providing utility and board interaction, reflecting the design philosophy of increasing the power level of cards available to veteran players.

The artwork for Winter's Rest was illustrated by Titus Lunter, a prolific contributor to the game who often emphasizes atmospheric and environmental storytelling. The design reflects the serene yet restrictive nature of the effect, depicting a stillness that mirrors the card's function of neutralising an opponent's creature. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional addition to the white color pie's defensive repertoire, noted primarily for its cost-effective removal capability within limited environments and its thematic cohesion with the colder, more evocative aesthetic choices present in the Modern Horizons expansion.
